Informing the patient

In assessing this due care criterion, the committees examine whether and how the physician has informed the patient of his/her illness and prognosis. For patients to make a well-considered request, they need to have a full understanding of their illness, the diagnosis, prognosis and possible treatment. It is the physician’s responsibility to ensure that the patient is fully informed, and to verify that.
