Legislation
On 10 April 2001 the eyes of the world were on the Dutch parliament as it approved the Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide (Review Procedures) Bill (Bulletin of Acts and Decrees 2001, 194).
Today, four years on, most people are aware of the general thrust of the Act, which entered into force on 1 April 2002: termination of life on request and assisted suicide remain criminal offences unless they are carried out by a doctor who reports his actions to the municipal pathologist and complies with the statutory due care criteria. All other actions intended to terminate life remain criminal offences.
